Greek Apulian / Campanian Blackware Askos

[ translate ]

**First Time At Auction**

Magna Graecia, South Italic Colonies, Apulian or Campanian, ca. 340 to 325 BCE. A fine wheel-thrown pottery askos with a squat circular foot, a globular body, a tapering neck with a funnel mouth, and an applied stirrup-shaped handle. The entire vessel - save for the area beneath the foot - is coated in lustrous black glaze, and a very faint silvery iridescence has developed atop most glazed areas. The askos was used to hold liquids, and one of this size could have been utilized to contain scented oils and perfumes which could become viscous in the cold. The handle was used to lower the vessel into heated water to liquefy the oil. Quite a clever ancient design! Size: 4.2" W x 3.25" H (10.7 cm x 8.3 cm)

Provenance: private Dere family collection, NYC, NY acquired in the 1980s/1990s.

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.

#152929
Condition Report: Restoration to back area of handle, with resurfacing and overpainting along break lines. Abrasions and nicks to foot, body, handle, and spout, with fading to glaze pigmentation, and light encrustations. Light earthen deposits and nice remains of original glaze throughout.
