Greek Apulian Ceramic Lekanis, Gnathia Ware

The lid decorated with grape wine and tendril motifs suspended from an incised line. The applied white color partially ‘gilded’ with a yellow ochre wash. The lid’s knob with concentrical bands on top. The black glazed body with a splayed foot reserved underneath, the handles with (sideward) straps. Size: D. lid 12 cm, H. 11. 7 cm, W. over handles (dish) 17. 6 cm Material: Ceramic Culture: Apulian, 340-320 BC Condition: Excellent quality and condition. Small portion of one handle and one strap of the second restored. The glaze has worn to a silver metallic color, a small spot peeled off. Provenance: Swiss private collection Ticino, since the 1970s. Collector’s label underneath (111) . Thence art market Zurich, December 2017 sale. Provenance data to the buyer. Comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.
