Greek Apulian Pottery red-figure kantharos, 23 x 12,6 x 6,7 cm

Kantharos (wine cup) with sweeping high handles, the flared cup's body on a high stem with a tiered foot. Adorned with a lady wearing a sakkos (head scarf) , beaded necklace and earrings. The kantharos were ancient deep cups, with two handles facing each other, allowing the cup to be held with both hands, and a very stylish foot. These vessels were associated with the god Dionysus, whose cup should never be empty according to mythology. Its main function was to be used in the Greek banquets and festivities, in which the wine would be served. It could also be given as a prize for athletes. Provenance: Dr. L. Benguerel Godó Collection, Barcelona, acquired in 1960 / J. Bagot Archeological Gallery, Spain, 2015 Statement seen by Catawiki. Important information.
