LOT 0023

Greek Arachic Pottery Aryballos - Pregnant Woman

[ translate ]

**Originally Listed At $600**

Greece, Corinth, Rhodes, or eastern Greece, Archaic period, ca. 600 BCE. A charming, mold-made ceramic aryballos in the shape of a pregnant woman, standing at a crouch with her hands over her stomach. A round mouth with a thick rim rises from her head. The broad, flat lip is designed to prevent spillage. A creamy beige pigment - probably once a bright white - covers the vessel. We know this object is from eastern Greece because of its unique shape; human figures, animals, and items became the body of aryballoi in this area. The Archaic period saw a marked change in Greek art, from abstract, geometric forms to a naturalistic style influenced by Egypt and the Near East, here on full display. Size: 2" W x 4.75" H (5.1 cm x 12.1 cm)

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.

#140227
Condition Report: Intact, with a few small chips in the glaze around the mouth and feet. Nice preservation of form. What looks like a mistake in the molding process on the hairline.
