Greek Attic Black Figure Cup by Centaur Painter

Greece, Athens (Attic), ca. 550 to 525 BCE. A lovely Attic kylix lip cup decorated via the black-figure technique by the Centaur Painter. The central register features two bearded centaurs holding white stones in their hands, likely in pursuit of two running deer depicted on the opposite side of the vessel. All figures are delineated with a sense of motion and energy and present fine incised details as well as highlights in fugitive red pigment. Size: 7.625" W handlespan x 3.5" H (19.4 cm x 8.9 cm)

Beazley archive features several pieces by the Centaur Painter including a Cup Little Master Lip featuring a centaur with stones (vase number 302484) in the collection of the British Museum (1890.7-31.25). See another kylix lip cup attributed to the Centaur Painter in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, New York (accession number 74.51.1371). See a band cup by the Centaur Painter in John Boardman "Athenian Black Figure Vases" (1974, rep 1985, figure 117). According to John Boardman, the Centaur Painter liked equids - "horses, centaurs, satyrs, rendered in a lively, nervous style." (J. Boardman.
