Greek Attic Black-Figure / White Ground Lekythos

Ancient Greece, Athens, Attic, ca. 5th century BCE. A lovely black-figure on white ground lekythos of a classic cylindrical body with a disc foot and a funnel lip. The body is beautifully decorated with a register of lattice motifs above a scrawling ivy vines with attached grape bunches, radiating frets encircling the shoulder, and solid black panels beneath the rim and above the foot. Lekythos vessels (plural lekythoi) traditionally held scented oils or perfumes and were decorated in the white ground technique from the middle until the end of the fifth century BCE. Size: 1.875" W x 5.5" H (4.8 cm x 14 cm).

Condition Report: Repair to handle, with resurfacing and overpainting along break lines. Minor abrasions and nicks to rim, handle, body, and foot, with fading and chipping to original pigmentation, and light encrustations. Nice earthen deposits and traces of original pigmentation throughout.
