Greek Corinthian Pottery Aryballos w/ Quatrefoil Motif

**First Time At Auction**

Greece, Corinth, Corinthian culture, ca. first half of the 6th century BCE. A wheel-thrown pottery aryballos of a squat form with a round but stable base, a spherical body, a narrow neck surmounted by a collared rim, and a slender handle joining rim and shoulder. The obverse of the cream-hued vessel is adorned with a quatrefoil motif that frames a large, abstract avian creature - with crosshatched wings and linear striations on the body and tail - within the interior area. Solid bands of dark pigment further embellish the overhanging lip and top of the rim as well as the upper half of the handle. Size: 2.5" Diameter x 2.6" H (6.4 cm x 6.6 cm)

Provenance: private C.Q. collection, Lexington, Virginia, USA, acquired October 30, 2013; ex-Artemis Gallery; ex-prominent New York City, New York, USA gallery, before 2010

Condition Report: Nicks to rim, handle, body, and base, with abrasions and fading to pigment, and a couple of small spalls, otherwise intact and very good. Light remains of pigment on body and collared rim, with craquelure to some areas on body, and faint silvery iridescence to pigment atop rim. Old inventory label written in black beneath base.
