Greek Daunian Polychrome Kyathos w/ Listati

Magna Graecia, Italy, Apulia / Daunian, ca. 4th century BCE. A large, beautiful example of a kyathos, a vessel for dipping, with bands of red and black abstract motifs known as listati around the body. The vessel is rounded, bulging out at its center, has a narrowed neck, and then broadens into a wide, gently sloping rim. A thin strap handle rises in an acute curve slightly above the rim. The piece has no foot, but stands on a flat base. Size: 7.3" L x 5.9" W x 6.3" H (18.5 cm x 15 cm x 16 cm)

Provenance: Whisnant Gallery, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, acquired before 2000; ex-Gerald Nordland collection, Chicago, USA
