Greek Egypt, Abydos, Alexander III (the Great), ca. 323 to 317 BCE. Obverse: head of Athena with Corinthian helmet. Reverse: Nike with sprig and wreath, under left wing is shell and left monogram and pentagram. Price 1525; Muller 384; SNG Cop. 647. Size: 0.7" W (1.8 cm); 8.5 grams

Alexander the Great needs no introduction, and his coinage had subsequent international fame. Although they began to be minted during his lifetime, coins in his name were also issued for two decades after his death by the generals who had divided up his empire, and similar coins were minted by cities for over two centuries to be issued as international coinage.
