[ translate ]

**Originally Listed At $400**

Magna Graecia, southern Italy, Apulia, ca. 340 to 325 BCE. A petite twin handled krater in the Xenon style with added salmon pink pigment depicting a band of abstract egg-and-dart pattern nested between a pair of double striations on one side and a nested sideways "S" motif also nested between a pair of double striations on the opposite side. A lovely example with a dramatic silhouette resulting from the high, angled handles and the globular body. Paired with this is an ancient blackware ceramic oil lamp with a circular body, a prominent spout, and a perforated nub handle, all upon a concave round base. Size: vase measures 2.875" H (7.3 cm); 3.375" H (8.6 cm) on included custom stand; oil lamp measures 3.875" W x 1.625" H (9.8 cm x 4.1 cm)

Xenon ware is a specific type of Apulian pottery, named after a vase in Frankfurt (Beazley, EVP, p. 219,1.) that is inscribed with the name: XENON. The type is distinguished by added matt pink/red decoration over black glaze.

Provenance: private Chicago, Illinois, USA collection, acquired in the 1980's
