Group of 3 Canaanite Bronze Duckbill Axe Heads

[ translate ]

Ancient Near East, Canaan, the Levant, Middle Bronze Age, ca. 1950 to 1539 BCE. A trio of iconic Holy Land artifacts, three finely shaped, bronze flat axe heads with the "duckbill" form - two ovoid openings near the tear-drop shaped socket. All were made using the lost wax casting process. This is the style of axe head from Hazor, which is described in the Book of Joshua as the head of the Canaanite city-states, and the site of one of Joshua's most important victories in the Israelites' conquest of the Promised Land. Archaeological expeditions from 1955 to 1958 revealed Middle and Late Bronze age temples, palaces, and fortifications, as well as a range of artifacts including cuneiform tablets, ivory objects, a basalt statue of a god, and bronze items like this one. This trio is displayed together on a custom stand that highlights their symmetrical forms. Size of widest: 2.95" W x 3.2" H (7.5 cm x 8.1 cm); 4" H (10.2 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: ex-Merrin Gallery, New York, USA; ex-private New York, USA collection, 1980s

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
