Guéridon coffee table carved with a statue of a Moretto - Louis Philippe - Soft wood - Second half 19th century
Beautiful Guéridon like coffee table in the shape of a statue of a Moorish servant in costume, half-length and ending with two intertwining fish tails, dark brown in colour. The carving is on stone pine wood, from typical alpine fir trees, used in Venice for this particular hand carving process. The body of the Moor is carved in the round in beautiful harmony, supporting a small ovoid shaped and carved top with the head, while the figure is supported in turn by a triangular base that opens with three legs also carved with the same quality of carving as the whole sculpture. After the models of Valentino Besarel (1829-1902) and the Venetian School. These objects were much appreciated by foreigners visiting Venice who often took a Moor home as a souvenir.
