HELENA BLOMQVIST. “Drowsy Ride” (Slumberland).
Description
Pigment print, image 73 x 90 cm. Signed Helena Blomqvist, dated 2013 and numbered 2013 on label verso.
The picture suite Slumberland shows sequences from the nocturnal adventures of a little boy, based on the dreams and nightmares of the artist's son.
Accompanied by a godzilla, the boy watches the splendor of civilization and the great adventures from afar. But they also set off on their own adventures.
It's about taking a step outside and seeing things in a new way; with a boy's gaze. At night, the street where he lives turns into a magical place, a ship at sea turns into a grand voyage. He defies his fears and sets off towards the unknown. The picture suite Slumberland has been exhibited at Bror Hjorts hus, Galleri Angelika Knäpper, Falsterbo Konsthall, Magasinet Falun and Östersunds konsthall.
Helena Blomqvist is a Swedish artist who works primarily with photography. She is educated at the University of Photography in Gothenburg and broke through in the early 2000s with her wayward image world. With great care, Blomqvist builds his own world of small scenographies into his photographs by hand. Each photograph is part of a narrative, like a fable, or a still image from a film. Blomqvist creates images critical of civilization with a humorous entrance and an existential undertone in which she highlights invisible people from the periphery. It has been about ageing, memory images, threatened existences and the relentless passage of time. The images have a mythological tone with a focus on loose narrative storytelling and fairy tales based on film, art and the history of photography. She works intuitively and tries to capture the moods of the present. Her way of working with photography is experimental and exploratory as she constantly develops her photographic imagery. Some of her most noted picture suites include The Last Golden Frog, The Elephant Girl, Florentine and On the Ending of Species.Show more
