HELENA BLOMQVIST. “Midsummer's Night” (from the series The Elephant's Girl).
Description
Pigment print, 85.5 x 108 cm. Signed Helena Blomqvist, dated 2011 and numbered 5/6 on label verso.
The centerpiece of The Elephant's Girl picture suite is
an abandoned summer house from a time long gone by. Spirits from children drift about in the surroundings, as do vanks from time to time. As company, they have each other and friends who have stepped in from the world of fantasy. The images appear as
Sensations of events that took place a long time ago. Under the apple trees, they pose for a photo shoot. A girl lies in a room where ivy has long been covering the floor and walls. It's about transience and the relentless passage of time. The photographs feature lines from old-time photographers, such as Julia Margret
Cameron and the Pre-Raphaelite Aesthetics. You can also find features from Beatrix Potter's fairy tales and from the film Grey Gardens. The Elephant Girl image suite has been shown
at Fotografiska, Avesta Art, Trelleborgs Konstmuseum, Borås Art Museum,
Skellefteå Konsthall, Trollhättans konsthall and Galleri Angelika Knäpper.
Helena Blomqvist is a Swedish artist who works primarily with photography. She is educated at the University of Photography in Gothenburg and broke through in the early 2000s with her wayward image world. With great care, Blomqvist builds his own world of small scenographies into his photographs by hand. Each photograph is part of a narrative, like a fable, or a still image from a film. Blomqvist creates images critical of civilization with a humorous entrance and an existential undertone in which she highlights invisible people from the periphery. It has been about ageing, memory images, threatened existences and the relentless passage of time. The images have a mythological tone with a focus on loose narrative storytelling and fairy tales based on film, art and the history of photography. She works intuitively and tries to capture the moods of the present. Her way of working with photography is experimental and exploratory as she constantly develops her photographic imagery. Some of her most noted picture suites include The Last Golden Frog, The Elephant Girl, Florentine and On the Ending of Species.Show more
