Hanging scroll - Paper, Wood - Okamoto Shuki (1807-1862) - Large and very fine sumi-e painting "Mighty eagle on the rock" - including kiwamebako - Japan - Late Edo period

Magnificent eagle stands on the rock emerging from turbulent and foaming waves. Masterpiece beautifully elaborated in confrontation of two different visions - calm and focused eagle and rough rock splashed by raging waves. Okamoto Shuki (1807-1862) was a painter from the late Edo period. He served the Odawara domain of the Okubo clan and studied under the painters, such as Onishi Keisai and Watanabe Kazan. He was influenced by the works of Shen Quan and the paintings of the Ming and Qing dynasty, and became distinguished as a talented realist flower-and-bird painter. His works could be found in many museums worldwide. Including signed and sealed kiwamebako by Nakata Unki. Nakata Unki was born in 1872 in Odawara, Kanagawa Prefecture. Studied under Haneda Koun. Roller ends: wood.
