Harriett Cope + double fore-edge painting

[ translate ]

Harriett COPE (translator, poet & publisher). – Alphonse DE LAMARTINE.
The Death of Socrates, a poem; translated from the French of A. De Lamartine. London: printed [by W. Glindon] and sold for the translator, 1829. 12mo signed in sixes (7 ½ x 4 1/2in; 190 x 114mm). Pp. [i-v]-vi-‘v’[i.e.vii], ‘vi’[i.e.viii]-‘vii’[i.e.ix]-[x-xi]-xii-xx; [1]-2-64. Purple/maroon straight-grained morocco, tooled in gilt and blind, pink watered-silk liners and free endpapers elaborately tooled in gilt, gilt edges concealing double foredge paintings of a hunt on horseback riding through the countryside and a river landscape with two anglers.

First edition of Cope's translation of Lamartine’s ‘La Mort de Socrate’, in a fine binding (probably bound for presentation). A very rare work: there are three copies recorded, two in the US and just one in the UK which is in the British Library. This may explain why this copy includes an 1837 ‘Duplicate’ stamp on the verso of the title. The fore-edges are competent but almost certainly later (probably 20th century?). OCLC 1310219 (2 copies in the US: Stanford, University of Arizona Libraries); 752966535 (1 copy in the BL).
