Harry (Henry) Chase (American, 1853-1889)

Gloucester Boats
Inscribed and dated "Gloucester. 85" l.r., stamped "SKETCH BY/HARRY CHASE." on the reverse according to a photograph taken prior to lining (see below), inscribed "HARRY CHASE" on the stretcher.
Oil on canvas, 10 1/2 x 13 in. (26.7 x 33.0 cm), framed.
Condition: Lined, dashes of retouch primarily to the sky, surface grime.

N.B. The photograph showing the stamp on the reverse of the original canvas is dated "September 80."
Estimate $600-800

Framed dimensions are 15 1/4 x 17 5/8 x 2 1/2 in.

The painting has been professionally restored, the surface is stable, and the retouch is very subtle. Under UV examination, some of the spots that fluoresce are areas of thin paint application that seem to be original to the painting where the tooth of the canvas shows through. This is most noticeable surrounding the blue brushstrokes in the sky. There are multiple dashes of retouch in the sky, with a slightly larger area just above the horizon line between the two vessels on the left side, and around the vessel with the raised sail, as well as scattered fine dots in the water.

Items may have wear and tear, imperfections, or the effects of aging. Any condition statement given, as a courtesy to a client, is only an opinion and should not be treated as a statement of fact. Skinner shall have no responsibility for any error or omission.
