"A Tranquil Hour", by Wilhelm Hasemann [1850-1913]; engraved by Hugo Buerkner [1818-1897], one of the leading German engravers of the late 19th century; genuine engraving on steel, printed on high quality heavy stock paper; published by Selmar Hess, NY in 1888; signed in plate "W. Hasemann pxt." and "H. Buerkner Sct.".

The signature of artist in the picture: "W.Hasemann, Karlsruhe, 1883." indicates, that his picture; "A young Girl Sewing" was created in 1883.

"Wilhelm Hasemann, an artist of the younger race, who hails from Carlsruhe, has expressed in his picture, "A Young Girl Sewing" the same tranquil domesticity that we find so often celebrated in German genre painting, but which is seldom treated with the taste and artistic completeness shown in this work. Apart from the sentiment that would attract the general public to the subject, there are many persons who will find a pleasure in looking at the picture for the sake of the pretty bow- window and the comfortable look of the corner in which this young girl has ensconced herself.

Pictures such as this we give by Hasemann have the advantage of recommending a style that is more distinctly amenable to modern ways of living. There is nothing here that might not be transplanted to the most modern house even in our own country, and made at home there, provided that a certain degree of culture had prepared the way for such simplicity, and for the true enjoyment of the home-side of life, the side that is not meant for strangers or the public." Art and Artists of our time, Hess, NY]

Wilhelm Gustav Friedrich Hasemann [1850-1913] German landscape and Genre painter. He completed his art education at the Academy in Berlin. Hasemann is considered to be the founder of the artist colony in Gutach. He painted mainly the Gutach village folklore genre scenes. At the end of the 19th - early 20th century, his artworks became popular motifs for illustrations and postcards. The paintings by Hasemann are still popular and achieve high auction prices.

The main characteristic of a steel engraving is that it has a very sharp, hard-edged, precise image. The computer scan can only give a very general impression of the detail. During the printing process, the steel plate does not need so much pressure as the copper plate, therefore, the steel plates do not leave a deep impressed area in the paper like the copper plates do.
