More about the artist:
After graduating with an MFA from Claremont Graduate University, Artist Vicky Chock relocated to the Hawaiian islands. She was a professor of Art at Leeward Community College for 32 years before retiring in 2010. Living in Hawaii and being surrounded by a strong Asian culture, her work took on Asian style and nuance. The rich sensuality and opulent colors incorporated in the costume design of Asian Royalty, as well as the tropical brilliance of the Hawaii landscape have played a major role in the development of the figures she creates.
Ms. Chock's art is a culmination of a gradual transition from traditional utilitarian pottery to non-functional forms -- into a discovery and exploration of the human form. The figures speak of a lifestyle of a different time. The pieces unabashedly celebrate life with cultural nuances of the Buddhism of Tibet, Burma, and the Pacific Islands, with China and Japan being the most prevailing common thread. Her art figures show mischievous playfulness, without giving up the social mores of a world of manners and style.
Her work is housed in the collection of the Hawaii State Art Museum, The State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, The Honolulu Museum of Art, Bank of Hawaii, First Hawaiian Bank, Group 70, the InterContinental Hotel Group, Stanford Hospital Arts Museum, The Everson Museum in Syracuse, New York, Penzoil Corporation in Dallas, Texas and many private collections
Her work has been shown in China; Japan; San Francisco; The Asian Art Museum, Palo Alto; Stanford Hospital Museum, Davis, California; Natsoulas Gallery, New York City; American Crafts Exposition, Hawaii; Contemporary Museum Honolulu; and the First Hawaiian Bank. Vicky Chock has been shown in numerous local shows, both juried and invitational for many years. Her work continues to delight collectors the world over.
