Head sculpture - D. R. Congo, Lega
wood, cowry shells,
Because of the three-legged stool reminding of the "wabalenga" figural type of ivory. Since this figure is made of wood and has two heads, a connection with the "sakimatwematwe" type is also possible.
Biebuyck suggests that these multiheaded figures "sakwimatwematwe" ("Mr. Many-Heads") symbolize the ability of the high-level "bwami" members to see in many different directions and to be wise and fair minded.
H: 21 cm, H: 8,3 inch
Lit.: Biebuyck, Daniel P., Lega, Brussels 2002, p. 132 and p. 169
Continent: Africa
