Head study of a man in profile, possibly a Rabbi, Louis-Jean-Jacques Durameau

[ translate ]

Louis-Jean-Jacques Durameau
Paris 1733 - 1796 Versailles
Head study of a man in profile, possibly a Rabbi

oil on canvas
canvas: 24¾ by 20 in.; 63 by 51 cm.
framed: 32 by 27½ in.; 81.3 by 69.9 cm.

Condition Report:
The canvas has been lined and the paint layer remains fresh under a clear, even varnish. The surface is planar and stable, with very little craqueleure visible. The brushwork remains thick with some impasto in certain areas of the face. Under ultraviolet light one can see evidence of restoration in a horizontal line across the beard, about 12 inches in length, perhaps from an old fold or tear in the canvas. Another horizontal line of restoration, thinner and smaller in length (about 4 inches) runs from the middle of the sitter's cheek through his nose. Otherwise there are a handful of small areas of restoration in the background, mostly towards the edges, and in the lower left corner. These restorations have all been done very well and are not visible to the naked eye. Offered in a carved giltwood frame, the painting can be hung in its current state.
