PROPERTY OF A GENTLEMAN

Oil on canvas
2003
30 1/4 × 20 1/8 in. (76.9 × 51.2 cm.)

Signed and dated ‘PADAMSEE / 2003’ upper left

PROVENANCE:
Pundole Art Gallery, Mumbai.

For Akbar Padamsee, faces have consistently served as a catalyst for exploration. In conversation about his work, he said, ‘my theme has always been people and portraits. The human figure and the face are all themes I am obsessed with ... Expression is more powerful when it is about a solitary figure or just a face ... Faces portray the character of a person. It is that which basically differentiates one from the other. And in God’s unique creations, no two faces are alike. In my creative endeavour, I love to go for that unusual one which stands apart in a crowd of faces. However, I paint all these faces from my mind and they seldom resemble a known character.’

(Arup K. Datta, Padamsee, exhibition catalogue, Sanskriti Art Gallery, Kolkata, 1992, unpaginated)
Condition: The colours of the original are similar to the catalogue illustration. Overall good condition.
