Hellenistic Greek Canosan Figure of Eros

[ translate ]

Magna Graecia, Apulia, Canosan Hellenistic Period, ca. 4th to 3rd century BCE. A beautiful, well preserved ceramic figure of Eros, depicted here with a chubby, childlike body and two pert wings extended from his shoulders. He wears a headdress of leaves, and is nude aside from that. White pigment is still present over much of the body, as is black pigment on his hair, and red and brilliant blue pigment on the wings. This was the Canosan style - white paint applied directly to buff pottery, with other colors then applied to the white - distinctive from those of other South Italic Greek colonies. Eros was a common Canosan figure associated with funerals and memorializing the dead, and this figure was likely made as a votive to be placed into a tomb. Size: 2.3" W x 3.6" H (5.8 cm x 9.1 cm); 3.9" H (9.9 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Alabama, USA collection; ex-Roy Green collection aquired prior to 2013

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
