Hendrick Staets, attributed to
Ships Wrecked on a Rocky Coast
Oil on panel. 28.5 x 38 cm.
Framed under glass.
Little is known about the marine painter Hendrik Staets and his work. Old inventories testify that he must have been quite productive. The present painting is comparable to a "Shipwreck off a Rocky Coast" dated 1655, which is in the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich (inv. no. BCHO781). Staets must have known Simon de Vlieger, but is rather a later successor to the style of Jan Porcellis.
Provenance
French private collection.
