Henri Matisse "The Sorrows of the King" Color Lithograph
20th century, French
The Sorrows of the King (La Tristesse du Roi) is a monumental 1952 masterpiece by Henri Matisse, recognized as his very final canvas-backed paper cutout (gouache découpée) and his last major self-portrait. Created when he was bedridden and near the end of his life, it uses bold overlapping shapes of black, green, yellow, and blue to depict a biblical King David playing the harp to soothe his heavy heart. The original composition belongs to the permanent collection of the Musée National d'Art Moderne, Centre Pompidou in Paris. Signed in plate lower right.
