Wonderful high relief altarpiece, depicting Saint George and the dragon, excellent workmanship in Rosso Antico marble. This marble is quite rare and precious. The high relief comes from an ancient church in Genoa. It was part of a group of sculptures (with Saint Michael the archangel) , placed on both sides of an altar, and depicting the victory of Good over Evil. The legend tells of a brave knight who wanted to slay a dragon that was killing people with its breath; he struck the monster with his spear and in return for his bravery asked the citizens to convert and be baptized. This piece is in perfect condition and flawless. The item is really unique, the fine craftsmanship, the care and precision of details must be emphasized.
