Hildegard Knef, Gift Horse Report on a Life 1stEd. 1971

"The Gift Horse: Report on a Life" by Hildegard Knef, translated from German by David Anthony Palastanga, published by McGraw-Hill, New York, 1971, stated First Edition.

"The Gift Horse" was the best-selling, most read book in post-war Germany. It is difficult to describe the visceral power of the writing; by describing memory as if it is happening now, starkly, stream of consciousness, the reader becomes a fly on the wall, a person in the room, Hildegard herself. This is no fly-by-night showbiz memoir, but a work of literature, a work of art." [review]

Hildegard Frieda Albertine Knef (1925-2002) was a German actress, singer, and writer. She was billed in some English-language films as Hildegard Neff or Hildegarde Neff.

Unusual and brilliant German actress Hildegard Knef was someone who grew up during the Third Reich and the war. Who also survived a month or so disguised as a soldier battling against and captured by the Russians. Then you get experiences from post-war Hollywood and the Broadway stage. I'm sure you would have to have been there to really understand but it gave me more of a sense of the times than the history books. Life threw her punches her entire life. One of the billion punches, her financial agent, a lawyer, fled to Venezuela with her life savings. Needed jaw surgery as a youth due to her mom chronically slapping her. What a life.
