Stunning six-panel hinagata byobu screen with a multi-coloured painting of a scene from ‘The Tale of Genji’ 源氏物語 (Genji Monogatari) , on a silver-leaf background. Prince Genji is walking with a child along the shore of a winding river near a cherry blossom tree that’s in full bloom. To the right, peeking through some window blinds, a woman in Heian style attire watches the two stroll. The top and bottom of this scene is overlapped by silver clouds. The painting is surrounded by a paper border with a blue and red flower design, which is protected by a black lacquered wooden frame. A small tear of approx. 10 cm between the two most right panels. And chip from the upper right corner of the wooden frame, which is mostly on the back and made black again, so it is not that visible anymore. Other than that no major traces of age and wear. Please see the photo’s as a reference. Due to its small size and because the screen is light in weight, the byôbu can also be easily mounted flat on a wall and presented as one piece of art. Total width: 130. 8 cm (2 x 22. 6 cm and 4 x 21. 4 cm) ; Height: 53. 6 cm. When shipped we will add a certificate of authenticity. The Tale of Genji is a classic work of Japanese literature written in the early 11th century by the noblewoman and lady-in-waiting Murasaki Shikibu. The original manuscript, created around the peak of the Heian period, no longer exists. The work is a unique depiction of the lifestyles of high courtiers during the Heian period. The work recounts the life of Hikaru Genji, or "Shining Genji", who is the son of an ancient Japanese emperor (known to readers as Emperor Kiritsubo) and a low-ranking concubine called Kiritsubo Consort. For political reasons, the emperor removes Genji from the line of succession, demoting him to a commoner by giving him the surname Minamoto, and he pursues a career as an imperial officer. The tale concentrates on Genji's romantic life and describes the customs of the aristocratic society of the time. It may be the world's first novel, the first psychological novel, and the first novel still to be considered a classic. (From Wikipedia)
