Beautiful & large black lacquer 蝋色漆 (roiro’urushi) hirobuta 広蓋 (presentation tray) with rounded corners and a gold lacquered rim. The tray is decorated with a gold and silver hiramaki-e 平蒔絵 and takamaki-e 高蒔絵 design of a flowing and winding river with the lotus leaves 蓮 (hasu) growing at the bends. It is painted in the style of the famous artist Ogata Kôrin. This image is set on a black background with some nashiji 梨子地 details. A continuous gold lacquer design of swirling foliage runs across the entire side. On the long sides this design comes together with at a golden crest depicting a bellflower 桔梗 (kikyô) in a hexagon. The bottom of the hirobuta is completely covered by a nice even black lacquer. The hirobuta is in a very good condition, with only some minor traces of age and wear. Please look at the photos for a condition reference. The black lacquer is still very vibrant with a nice shine to it. This even black layer in combination with the contrasting gold and silver tones gives the hirobuta a striking and wondrous appearance. Height 10. 2 cm, Width 72. 9 cm, Depth 48. 7 cm.
