Hispanic Flemish School. Circa 1530 -1550.
Hispanic Flemish School. Circa 1530 -1550.
"Pietà" and "Saint John the Baptist".
Tempera on panel. Díptych. Panel measurements: 19 x 15,5 cm. each. Open measurements: 23,5 x 41 cm. Closed measurements: 23,5 x 20,5 cm.
The pictorial quality of these panels is undeniable, and can be seen in details such as Saint John the Baptist’s gaze, his delicate features, like those of the Virgin Mary and Jesus: In spite of the slight flaws it has, the fact that it has never been repainted means that the original quality and fineness are preserved.
There are two inscriptions on the back which could be the signature: Fernado de Ávila, and in the other part "D Bernard…" seems to be written. Also, on both faces, the same illegible word is written, which appears to begin with "Comp".
