Historic Gorham Sterling Silver Loving Cup c.1900

Very rare sterling silver three handled loving cup from a prominent New England family. Crafted of solid sterling silver with gold wash interior. The handles are formed like branches with grape leaves and grapes at the base of each handle. Inscription reads "Presented to Major Louis Richmond Cheney By The First Company Governors Foot Guard 1903". Later inscription reads "Vested To The Officers Association By Mrs John T. Roberts In Memory Of Her Father 1950". Verso features engraved emblem of the Governors Foot Guard. The First Company Governor's Foot Guard is the oldest American military formation in the United States with an unbroken lineage. The First Company Horse Guard was created in 1788 as the Independent Volunteer Troop of Horse Guards in Hartford. Base marked with Lion, Anchor, G, Sterling, A231, 7 Pints. Weight is 1850 grams.
