Historical Nautical Chart from Prince Albert of

Chart and provenance documentation and materials related to Prince Albert I (1848-1922) and his yacht the Hirondelle. Grouping includes: 1.) Large frame measuring 49.5 x 35.5 containing a nautical chart titled “Afrique Cote Oest, Des Iles De Los A L’ile Sherbo" (Africa West Coast, From Los Islands To Sherbo Island), 1882 by G. Heraud (Feb. 1895 edition). Chart measures 38 x 25 (sight) and is blind stamped at lower right “Yacht L’Hirondelle Carte Plans de la Albert Prince de Monaco . Chart exhibits some toning, color highlights and a horizontal split. Framed with and laid on top of the chart are two additional documents/letters providing provenance including; a.) A 9.5 x 7 sheet detailing the origin of the chart from the chart room of the 340-foot steam yacht Hirondelle of Albert I of Monaco. B.) A 7 x 5 photograph of Kaiser Wilhelm’s flag that flew from the Hirondelle with a 1 x 3.5 fragment of red fabric and an explanation as to the origin of the relic. 2.) Large frame measuring 30 x 15 containing 2-typed letters being; a.) Letter dated November 15, 1935 from James W. Gerard (1867-1951) United States lawyer, diplomat, and justice of the New York Supreme Court to H.H. Harris (?-1965) United States businessman and president of General Alloys Company. Letter on Gerard letterhead detailing Gerard’s association with the Hirondelle and his experiences. B.) Letter dated December 23, 1938 from H.H. Harris to Leon V. Solon (1873-1957), English painter, ceramist, and graphic artist and part of the group of artists to create the pediment at the Philadelphia Museum of Art on General Alloy Company letterhead sending chart to Solon as a Christmas gift. Sheet exhibits some toning and wrinkling. 3.) Framed copy of book “My Four Years in Germany by James W. Gerard, New York, George Doran Company, 1917. Book exhibits wear and staining to cover. Gerard served as ambassador to Germany from 1913 to 1917 and this book details these experiences. 4.) Postcard of “Le Yacht Hirondelle at anchor in Monaco harbor. Prince Albert I on Monaco devoted much of his life to oceanography, exploration and science using the yacht Hirondelle and his other yachts to mount expeditions to all areas of the Mediterranean and into the Arctic. **Please Note: This item is NOT eligible for in-house shipping.
