Contemp. burgundy morocco (sl. rubbed & soiled, some sm. scratches), covers with gilt-ruled border and corner pieces, gilt orn. spine with 7 raised bands (head & tail def.), marbled endpapers. Good copy on large and heavy paper. Monumental testimony of the prints by one of England's most important pictorial artists, political satirist, social critic and editorial cartoonist, author of "Beer Street", "Gin Lane" and many others, William Hogarth (1697-1764). Our copy contains a letterpress title (dated 1790), list of plates mentioning 103 pl. (mounted and titled "A catalogue of the original works of William Hogarth, contained in this volume", with the original price for each pl.; sm. tear) and is illustrated with a frontispiece portrait and 107 engraved plates on 84 thick paper ff. Some of the pl. (34 in number) are mounted. Of the orig. 103 pl. mentioned in the list of pl., 4 are missing: 18. Before; 19. After; 21. Noon; 74. France. Enriched with 5 pl. not on the list and bound at the end: "The Indian Emperor", "Analysis of Beauty" (Plate I & II), "The Stage of Cruelty" (Plate III & IV, woodcuts); and with an extra copy of pl. 17. "Modern midnight conversation" printed in red, of 75. "England" and of pl. 82. "Charles Churchill" (mounted, another state). Pl. 100 "The shrimp girl" printed in red. Included are Hogarth's famous print series, as The harlot's progress (6 pl.), The rake's progress (8 pl.), Marriage à la mode (6 pl.), The idle and industrious apprentice (12 pl.), The stages of cruelty (4 pl.) and Don Quixote (6 pl.).
