Hard boards, decorative green cloth stamped in black, gilt-stamped spine title [some wear]; 5.1/2" x 8"; cream-ocher color endpapers, inscription on the front endpaper, 'H.P. De Forest' is written on the first blank page, frontispiece with tissue guard, 401 pages + 12 engraved plates + publisher's advertisements in rear, printed on high quality heavy paper, a little wear, the last c.7 pages have wrinkles [see photo], very good condition.
Josiah Gilbert Holland (1819-1881) was a novelist and poet who also wrote under the pseudonym Timothy Titcomb. He helped to found and edit Scribner's Monthly (afterwards the Century Magazine), in which appeared his novels.Mary Hallock Foote (1847-1938) was an American author and illustrator. She is best known for her illustrated short stories and novels portraying life in the mining communities of the turn-of-the-century American West. She attended the Female Collegiate Seminary in Poughkeepsie, New York, then studied art in New York City at the Cooper Institute School of Design for Women. By her early twenties she had become established in New York City as an accomplished artist-illustrator for notable publishers there.
