Description:

Horst P. Horst (German/American, 1906-1999)

Hands behind Buttocks, 1952, a later printing, printed by Sal Lopes in an edition of 25 plus artist's proofs. Signature dry stamp l.r., signed in pencil on the verso, titled, dated, and inscribed "HP.H. #54...Platinum Palladium/Edit Size 25/A/P" in pencil in a later hand on the verso. Platinum palladium print, image size 19 1/4 x 14 7/8 in. (48.9 x 37.8 cm), sheet size 23 1/4 x 18 7/8 in. (59.1 x 47.9 cm), unmatted, unframed.
Condition: Good.

Provenance: A gift from the artist to the current owner.

N.B. In the early 1950s, Horst produced a set of male figural studies that emphasized the idealized human body by accentuating musculature through light and pose. These studies were first exhibited in Paris in 1953 and reprinted in the 1980s using the platinum palladium process, which is treasured for its nuanced tonal range, surface quality, and permanence.

Hands behind Buttocks is a master class in lighting as the contours of the male form take on a subtle stylization and appear to oscillate between human form and pure form. Horst's approach to the male nude is modern in its fragmentation, as well as classical in its focus on form, creating a work of timelessness. Full of mystery, intrigue, and allure, the work's strong composition and dramatic chiaroscuro are characteristic of Horst's oeuvre and echo his approach to fashion photography as he pushed the boundaries of the medium to serve the human form.
