Elizabeth Dore. Needlework Sampler. Portsmouth, NH 1822. . Elizabeth Dore (1809-1864) worked this delightful 'house and barn' sampler in 1822 in Portsmouth, NH. She included six rows of alphabets and numerals, an extract on the left and three golden rules on the right. The bottom panel includes the familiar house and barn landscape, typical of this group.. . Inscribed, Elizabeth Dore Aged 13 Portsmouth May 31 A.D. 1822. And, The tear down childhood cheek that flow/ Is like the dewdrop on the rose/ When new the summer breeze comes by/ And waves the bush the flower is dry. And, Worthy the observation of everyone/ Do everything in its proper time/ Keep everything to its proper use/ Put everything in its proper place.. She was the daughter of farmer John and Elizabeth (Betsey) Dore and born in Somersworth, NH. In 1821, her parents moved to Portsmouth where Elizabeth attended school and stitched this sampler.. . She married mariner Ezekiel Dyer (1807-1829) in 1829 and was widowed in 1832 leaving her with an infant son. She was listed as a laundress in the 1860 census. She also had a daughter in 1842 and the father is unknown.. Silk on linen; 15 1/2" x 17 1/4".. . Provenance: Mary Jaene Edmonds, and Dan and Marty Campanelli who did the extensive research that accompanies this sampler.
