Huari Polychrome Textile Panel - Jaguar

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Huari (Wari), ca. 700 to 1000 CE. A beautiful textile panel comprised of tightly-woven camelid (alpaca or llama wool) fibers in vivid hues of vermilion, cobalt, olive, cream, wheat, sage, coffee, and espresso. The fragment depicts a highly-abstract jaguar with a sinuous tail, powerful limbs, and a column projecting from its back, as well as an oblong head emitting the "life force" from its fanged mouth. The animal is surrounded by an enclosed border of stepped motifs. Mounted atop a fabric display panel. Size (textile): 5.2" L x 4.5" W (13.2 cm x 11.4 cm); size (display panel): 17" L x 16" W (43.2 cm x 40.6 cm).

Condition Report: This is a fragment of a larger item. Loss to one lower corner with modern fabric sewn in its place. Light loosening to some interior and peripheral fibers, with minor staining and fading to original pigmentation. Colors and iconography are still visible and vivid.
