Huari Pottery Bowl w/ Sea Creatures

[ translate ]

Pre-Columbian, Central Peru, Huari (Wari) culture, ca. 700 to 1000 CE. A hand-built pottery bowl with a rounded base, flared walls, and a beautifully painted basin featuring mythical iconography. The undecorated exterior showcases the earthy peach and orange hues of the pottery. The interior basin is decorated with an ensemble of mythical zoomorphic creatures in cream and black hues atop a russet red ground. Along the top of the interior walls are two pairs of proportionally spaced zoomorphic creatures, and in the center lies a swirling serpentine creature - perhaps conjuring a portal to another realm. A poetic composition with eccentric stylization. Size: 8.25" W x 3.25" H (21 cm x 8.3 cm)

Lucite display stand for photography purposes only.
