Turner, Jonathan Swift, Walt Whitman, Victor Hugo, William Wordsworth, William M. Thackeray, Charles Dickens, Oliver Goldsmith, William Shakespeare, Thomas A. Edison.

The biographies are written by Elbert Hubbard. With sketch monochrome portraits. The typography, borders and initials were designed by the Roycroft artists at their shops, which are in East Aurora, New York. Published and copyright by Roycrofters, East Aurora, New York, 1928. This is volume 1 of the Little Journeys series.

Elbert Green Hubbard (1856-1915) was an American writer, publisher, artist, and philosopher. Hubbard is known best as the founder of the Roycroft artisan community in East Aurora, New York, an influential exponent of the Arts and Crafts Movement. Some of the Roycroft Campus buildings remain; they have been restored and are open to visitors. The complex is a National Historic Site.

Among Hubbard's many publications were the fourteen-volume work "Little Journeys to the Homes of the Great." He and his second wife, Alice Moore Hubbard, died aboard the RMS Lusitania when it was sunk by a German submarine off the coast of Ireland on May 7, 1915.
