Icon, St. Archangel Michael - Wood - First half 19th century
Antique Russian icon with "St. Archangel Michael" surrounded by four saints and two marginal saints.
Hand-painted with egg tempera on a wooden panel with a chalk base. Typical icon-making method in 18th and 19th centuries in Tsarist Russia. The painting is quite masterly and detailed. Perfectly coordinated color contrasts and successful shades. The painting contains very authentic craquelure. Partial restorations and corrections are present. Especially in the upper part of the icon (see photos) . The Archangel Michael holds a cloth with "Mandylion". The two marginal saints are "St. Matrona" and "St. Palagija". All saints are labeled. The inscriptions are easy to read. The edges of the icon and the center field are decorated with various patterns (see photos) . This is an Old Believer icon that was created around 1890-1910. Forehead sponkas are attached at the top and bottom. The icon is inscribed in Cyrillic on the back.
The owner of the icon was probably Matrona Fyodorovna Kovalev.
The icons are in good condition with typical age-related signs of wear (see photos) .
Particularly interesting for collectors and connoisseurs of the matter.
