Il Callotto resuscitato oder Neu eingerichtes Zwerchen Cabinet. [Augsburg M. Engelbrecht 1720? - or a contemp. pirated ed.?] 46 (of 50?) numbered engravings (cut short shaving the decorative borders, some margins strengthened, a few sm. tears). 19th-c. cloth, gilt-titled flat spine. Throughout the 18th century, dwarfs were generally depicted in a satirical manner, often exaggerated to a grotesque degree, as demonstrated by "Varie Figure Gobbi" by Jacques Callot (1592 - 1635). These were imitated in a 50-sheet series of engravings by Elias Baeck (or Beck, 1679-1749), "Calloto resuscitato oder neueingerichtetes Zwerchen Cabinet" published in Augsburg in 1710 by Martin Engelbrecht. This series contained full-figure depictions of male and female dwarfs as ethnic caricatures, with German titles and quatrains. The series influenced numerous sculptors and other artistst (e.g. model makers in porcelain manufactories) throughout Europe. Prov. 19th-c. presentation inscription on front flyleaf.
