TITLE/CONTENT OF MAP: 'Il Mappamondo o sia Descrizione Generale del Globo Ridotto in Quadro'
A map of the world on the Mercator projection, showing the voyages of Cook and Bougainville between 1766-1771. The eastern coastline of Australia, and the entire coastline of New Zealand are notably inaccurate - Tasmania is shown joined to the Australian mainland. The coastlines of much of Arctic Canada and Alaska are wildly speculative - Greenland is shown conjoined to the North American continent.
DATE PRINTED: Published in 1779. Engraved in 1774 (this date is printed on the map).
