Impressive 19th C. European Wood / Silver Crucifix

[ translate ]

Europe, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A large antique European Crucifix, finely made from high quality silver (96% silver) and wooden elements, depicted in a Baroque manner that captures the drama and sorrow of this tragedy. The hollow cast silver Christ figure presents severely delineated anatomy, replete with stigmata (the marks indicative of Christ's Crucifixion wounds) upon the hands and feet. Aside from the loincloth, Christ is depicted with as much of his suffering body visible as is possible. On the upper arm of the Cross is the banner (also 96% silver) inscribed "INRI" (Latin for Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews) which is said to have been placed there by Pontius Pilate. Below Christ is the skull and crossbones of Golgotha (also 96% silver). Finally, ornate silver openwork terminals (also 96% silver) adorn the ends of the Cross's arms. A powerful piece of religious art. Size: 15.75" W x 26.75" H (40 cm x 67.9 cm); 27.125" H (68.9 cm) on included custom stand. Silver quality: 96% silver.

Provenance: ex-private Arizona collection.

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.

#148944
Condition Report: There is a small indentation to Christ's right knee. Otherwise His form is well preserved, as are the other silver elements (banner, skull & crossbones, and openwork terminals). There are a few scuffs to verso of the wooden cross, and the lower end of the Cross is unfinished and narrower, perhaps intended to be placed in a fixture of an altar.
