Impressive Greek Terracotta Censer- Female w/ Polos

Magna Graecia or Sicily, ca. 3rd to 2nd century BCE. A striking, finely molded terracotta ritual incense burner in the form of a youthful female bust. She wears a high polos headdress in the form of a fluted column upon her attractive visage, a face comprised of naturalistic features framed by a wavy, centrally parted coiffure. Her torso is draped in a himation, the cascading folds of fabric flowing over her breasts. Her headdress resolves in a bowl depression atop for offerings showing carbon deposits from ritual usage. Size: 8.75" W x 14.625" H (22.2 cm x 37.1 cm)

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; From the estate of V.P., Linz, acquired between 1995 and 2005.

Condition Report: Upper bowl section repaired from multiple pieces with visible break lines. Losses to base, chips to peripheries of bowl, and high-pointed areas of the visage/bust. Expected surface wear commensurate with age, but some pigment remains. Scattered mineral deposits. Carbon deposits on bowl from ritual usage. Small firing hole beneath the bust and larger one on the verso.
