\Artist: In the Circle/Follower of Jacques Courtois "Borgognone". (1621 / 1676)
Technique: Oil on canvas\Signature: Not signed\Dimensions: 61_41_5_cm
Artist: Attributed to Jacques Courtois by a highly reputable UK Fine Art dealer from whown we acquired the painting in writing but we offering as a follower of/in the circle of the artist 1621 - 1676) A beautiful large French old master oil on canvas which has previously been attributed to Jacques Courtois ( see above) - also known as “Il Borgognone". This work is on canvas and is superbly painted with incredible atmosphere and light . There is an artist plaque for the frame affixed to verso of the frame . The work is on canvas which has been relined circa 1950. The later very attractive ebonsied frame offered as a gift. Title: “Cavalry battle ” Signature: No visible signature Provenance: Private French collection through a highly reputable UK art dealership from who the painting was previously acquired . Medium: Oil on canvas Size: Overall measurements including the ebonised frame are 61 x 41 x 5 cm with the painting itself measuring cm x cm Condition report : The painting is in very good condition for it's antiquity . The canvas has been lined most probably about 50-70 years ago. The canvas is in very good tension and would almost certainly have been cleaned when it was lined. There is a slight darkness to the lacquer but this somehow enhances the tonality of the atmosphere of the painting in our opinion. There is craquelure throughout the painting commensurate with it's considerable antiquity. Jacques Courtois was one of the most individual talents of the French School. He was only 15 when he first went to Italy, and before this trip had already worked with his father, the painter Jean Courtois. In Milan he became friends with Baron de Vatteville . On his return to Milan, he spent some time working with Jérôme, a French painter from the Lorraine region, and through him came to know Guido Reni and Albani. On their advice he began painting religious pictures. He travelled all over Italy to improve his artistic skills and, during the course of his travels, met Pietro da Cortona and Pieter van Laer. After some time Courtois decided to focus on painting battle paintings. He was commissioned to work for Count Carpigna and Prince Matteo de' Medici. . We are willing to issue a certificate of authenticity to the successful bidder in the circle of /follower of the named artist and also to send the original COA that was sent by the UK Fine Art company from which it was acquired.
