*Indonesia: Pattern 25 Rupiah, 1971. PCGS SP65. CuNi Clad Steel Pattern.
An exceptionally rare and fascinating pattern issue from Indonesia's post-independence coinage programme. Dated 1971, this proposed 25 Rupiah design was never adopted for circulation, surviving today only as a limited number of presentation and testing strikes produced during the development of Indonesia's modern decimal coinage.
The obverse features the distinctive Cenderawasih (Bird-of-Paradise), one of Indonesia's most iconic native birds and a symbol closely associated with the eastern provinces of the archipelago. Its elaborate plumage, rendered here in elegant minimalist form, reflects the modern artistic style favoured by Indonesian coin designers during the late 1960s and early 1970s.
The reverse carries the denomination 25 Rupiah within a simple yet bold layout intended for practical circulation use. Struck in copper-nickel clad steel, the pattern reflects experimentation with lower-cost metallic compositions at a time when many nations were moving away from traditional silver and higher-value alloys due to rising production costs.
