In the introduction Brambilla gives a history of surgery and surgical instruments from antiquity to his own time, selecting the instruments from the best sources . Most of the instruments were collected by Brambilla to embellish the display shelves of the Josephinum", the first medico-surgical academy in central Europe, founded by Brambilla (Hagelin, Rare and Important Medical Books in the Library of Karolinska Institute, pp. 134-35).
