Interesting Lot of Ten Ancient and Antique Objects

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE; North America, Native American, ca. 500 to 1500 CE; Western Europe, ca. 19th century CE. A delightful gathering of ten ancient and antique items in a variety of forms. First are a pair of Roman bronze furniture tacks with wide heads and narrow pins. Second are a pair of bronze nails with squared heads and lengthy, bent bodies. Third are a pair of bronze phalera (military buttons) used to denote rank and status within the military, often worn either by soldiers or horses. Fourth is a pair of stone arrowheads, one light gray and knapped, the other red-orange with a copper wire wrapped around the tail. Last is a pair of antique European clay tobacco pipes with large receptacles and short mouthpieces. Size of largest (Roman nail): 4" L (10.2 cm).

Provenance: private Carlton collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired between 1965 and 1980

Condition Report: All items have age-commensurate surface wear as well as earthen deposits throughout. Roman nails have bending to overall forms, small chips, and green patina. Roman phalera have small losses around peripheries and green patina. Roman furniture tacks have bending to pins with green patina. Native American arrowheads are intact and very good. European pipes have chips and losses around receptacles and mouth pieces, fading to designs, and light discoloration.
