“Blue Jean” lapis lazuli was first discovered and mined in the 1970’s in a different mine across a river from the main mining areas. It was around the same time as the Russian invasion of Afghanistan and the Mujahideen freedom fighters and locals mined it before transporting it in secrecy across the border to Pakistan. It was sold to officials of various embassies and a quantity ended up in the USA where it was highly prized and used in small pieces of jewellery. The name is derived from the unusual striations and configuration of the stone which is similar in appearance to worn and frayed blue denim, which was the staple material for the vast quantities of blue jeans popular at the time.
