Unused engraved invitation to witness an execution. The 5 1/4" x 3" card reads: "Tombstone, Ariz. July 24, 1905. / M ___________ [unfilled] / The Sheriff of Cochise County, Arizona, announces that on Friday, August, 11, 1905, at the hour of 12 o'clock, Noon, / E. EREDIA / Will be Executed at the Jail Yard in this City for the Murder of Arthur Wight. You are Respectfully Invited to Witness the Execution..." ________ [unfilled] Sheriff. Framed for display in shadowbox style 8 1/2" x 10 1/2"
E. Eredia also known as Chappo, the youngest of three men accused of the murder of Sheriff Wight, had his sentence commuted to life in prison at the Yuma Territorial Prison just 5 days before he was scheduled to hang. Many invitations were mailed out prior to this, but some were never used. In other words, this is an invitation to the hanging that never happened.
